This is an example of it's use.
A vestige of a previous attempt to install a program was interfering
with subsequent attempts to install an update for that program. In
effect, I couldn't go forwards or backwards. I couldn't uninstall the
previous version of the program because it wasn't showing in my
programs list. When I ran the cleanup tool, I could see the installer
in the list and was able to delete it. Then I was able to install the update.
