Ann and other list members, Ok, here is what I learned. I went from Office 2000 to Office 2010 so protected mode may have been introduced in earlier Office modes but this was my first experience with it. The best way to learn more on this is to send yourself a test Word attachment. When you go to open the attachment you sent to yourself it will open in protected mode unless you have disabled this feature. Hit the F6 key to toggle through the various panes on the screen. In one of the choices, A dialogue box will open giving you a choice to a link for more details or select a button to edit the document as usual. If you click the link for more information there are links to follow that explain things in great detail and also a settings button if you want to adjust how Outlook handles various attachments, web pages, etc. Basically it appears that Outlook has been setup to provide maximum protection against viruses, worms, Trojans, etc. Hope this helps
