I am using Jarte. It is free, although there is a paid version available.

I am using Windows 7. There is apparently some sort of Microsoft update
that no longer allows Jarte to open doc files unless you download a
converter pack. When you try to open a doc file Jarte will tell you about
the converter pack and where to download it. I did that and am using Jarte
successfully.
I also found templates to address envelopes and make mailing labels with
Jarte, although I have not really done more than address an envelope for
practice so far.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] .doc files
Hi list. My new computer did not have microsoft word installed, so I am
using wordpad. Can anyone recommend a free program that converts .doc files
to .txt files that is jaws friendly,, or some other solution short of
purchasing Word? Thanks in advance for help.
