Ok, thanks, I did wonder about the additional box, and am glad you mentioned it. I think I'll probably do the same as you in the future then.

so do I have this correct? I can upgrade to windows 7 32 bit with jaws 13 and my ALVA will work ok.

At present I do not have the option to buy a new display and so was keeping fingers crossed it could be made to work somehow.

I would be interested to learn how you are finding the ALVA BCC though, if it's off topic please could you write off list?

Unfortunately no. The ALVA Satellite braille displays are not compatible with 64-bit versions of Windows. They do work with 32-bit windows but not with 64-bit. The JAWS version is not relevant. Optelec sells a protocol converter unit for this but I found it to be very unstable and unreliable.
I've been there....
I had to buy a brand new ALVA BC680 to get myself back in business again.
