ok, hmmm
in your original message you said the following:
My pc froze up as I was trying to start up my e mail in internet
explorer.
and:
When I turned it back on and went to O.E., the in box said "closed"
and,
my in box and spam folder were empty.
and something like ""and so was the deleted items folder""
this makes things a bit confusing to me, are you using O.E. to access a
web
Email account, or did I.E. and O.E. get confused in the message
somewhere?
the second thing is, you a bit later said:
I do run a back up with McAfee.
ok, but what type of backup and to where are your files backed up to,
the
online storage system site, to another drive, ?
before I try to clarify, I need more accurate information, if you used
I.E.
the files are probably gone, with O.E. and a backup you should easily
be
able to get your files back, or most of them, depending on what is
backed
up
by the program your using.
I use a file and folder backup and synchronization so I added the
backup
program I mentioned to you to make sure I had a backup of my emails
without
any hassle. I would recommend getting it JIC. it can save a backup file
in
your "my documents" folder and replace lost emails and there accounts
with
a
few minutes of simple clicking.
give me neater info and between your MacAfee techs and us out here we
can
do
our best.
and since what I do out here is post to, gather from, and repost to
(with
an
occasional bit of finding it out added in) information on 8 lists
currently,
or maybe its 9 now, I lost count, I know what a bad crash or a disk
failure
can mean in the area of information loss! triple backup, ah yep,
there's
nothing like triple backups of your stuff!
sincerely,
inthane

Inthaneelf, thank your for your help.
I have to admit, I am a good bit behind the technical curve however.
I got lost when you started talking about a "back up" drive.
I don't think I have one, or, I don't know what that is.
I do have McAfee which has a back up feature and I am currently working
with
their technical support to help recover the files.
Also; I have downloaded a free program to recover O E e mails.
This has not proved to be much helpful either, in that, many of the
recovered files are empty.
Thanks again.
Rich

ok, I'm a bit behind so am going to send this along just in case.
what you need to do (and i can only hope you can), is:
1. open O.E.
2. go to the tools menu and then to options and enter on it.
3. in here control tab to the maintence tab, in here you should have a
button marked "save folder" or something like this.
enter on that, and shift tab into the edit box with the huge path in
it,
(this is where your folders are stored, hit home, hit control shift
and
end
to select the whole thing and control c to copy it.
4. paste the address you just copied into note pad.
now then this is where we start the preyare wheel spinning and hope
the
planets are in a good alignment!
this should be the location where the database files that hold your
messages
and the like were being stored (if it turns out to not be the case we
will
attack that if/when we need to)
so:
5. get your backup drive running
6. depending on how your backups are stored, will make this tricky, if
its
a
image, it will probably be an iso image, if so you will need a
application
to "mount" or give you access to, the information stored in the image,
if
its in zip files youll need to unzip the one that has your c drive on
it,
with the main sections in it. (look at that path, it will tell you
what
you
need to find and have access to)
if you have a direct copy of the drive, thats phonomal, replace the C
at
the
beginning of your path with the backup drive letter and paste it into
the
run dialog box
whatever means you need to employ, you need to make it so you can get
to
that place in the backup where your files are stored that corrasponds
with
the original path you copied!
6. when you get to this location, copy all the .dbm files you will
find
there, there will be a number of them!
7. Now, make sure that you totally close out O.E.
not minimized, not held in reserve in the system tray, closed!
8. go to the location on your original path that you copied (if you
changed
the C: to the backup drive letter, change it back now) and paste the
files
into this location, and say yes to all the replacements (xp has that
nice
yes to all, use it!)
9. when all has copied, close out the backup drive, and restart your
computer.
10. open O.E. and take a look, it should have all your email files up
to
the
point of your last backup in place now.
sorry i don't know how to get more back, a tool like disk digger, or
more
superior file retrieval tools might be able to get them, but i don't
know
and can garentee nothing
i used to use a application called E-backup that is available from:
www.jfwlite.com/programs
along with the jaws scripts there for it (yes there still working and
have
been up to jaws 13 on windows XP)
it makes a seperate backup in a single file that it (the application
which
i
kept on a disk) can install along with your internet explorer
favorites
folder. and makes email retrieval a much faster and simpler deal.
HTH,
inthane

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Major e mail issue with outlook express
I have XP and 13.0.
My pc froze up as I was trying to start up my e mail in internet
explorer.
No keys worked so I hit the alt/control/delete key, and nothing
worked.
So I had to hard boot the pc off.
When I turned it back on and went to O.E.,the in box said "closed"
and,
my in box and spam folder were empty.
There was nothing in the deleted folder either.
I do run a back up with McAfee.
What would be the best way to recover these important messages?
I have not checked on the web on my web mail account through AT&T
yet.
Thanks for any help.
Rich
