yes, I understand that. But I was just wanting to know how to substract one
cell not multiple. Several have provided answers that work.

Trish,

In the example you gave : =C3-SUM(C4:C20) the result is the difference
of the contents of C3 and the sum or total of the contents from C4 through
C20. The SUM function finds the total or sum of everything in C4 through
C20. The formula then subtracts that total from the contents of C3 and that
is the result in the cell containing that formula.

Thank you for the help. One question here, the =C3-C4 doesn't need the SUM
added? Maybe that's where I'm going wrong..

Many Thanks,
Trish

Let's take the example given =C3-SUM(C4:C20) and suppose you only want to
subtract 1 cell C4. Use the following:
=C3-C4

Someone provided this info and I saved it, I have tried to do the steps here
and it works with this many cells, but I only want to subtract one cell from
the other and that's where it get's messed up. So whoever provided this
info, could you please explain how I would go about getting same results for
just one or 2 cells?

Thanks,
Trish

Here's one way to subtract c4 through c20, a list of charges, from c3--the
beginning balance:

=C3-SUM(C4:C20)
