it could also be corrupted files if she used it a lot, I've had that happen,
if you open it from the disk you should get a remove, repair, or alter set
of buttons in an early dialog and can choose fix it/repair in there
or remove and reinstall if you really think its beyond repair (not generally
so)

I don't use virtual ribbons at all.  I have office 2007, and between 
digging around and using the old keystrokes which mostly still work, I 
do fine.  Office doesn't generally just quit, either you have something 
wrong with your computer's hardware or you have some sort of virus.
