Well, there is a steeper learning curve for Win 8 than Win 7. There's a
fair amount of specialized software that hasn't been updated to work with
Win 8 yet.
Windows 7 is supported through 2020, and I suspect with the lukewarm
reception Win 8 is getting so far, Microsoft might end up extending support
for Win 7 beyond that date just as it did sevdral times with Xp.
You might have to do more looking on-line, but there is still a substantial
selection of Win 7 machines, if that's the way you choose to go.
There are some nice things about Windows 8, like the quicker boot-up times
and improved backup/restore options.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] JAWS 14 and the Windows 8 dilemma
Hi all,
My current laptop (running JAWS 11 and Vista) is going to crash any day
now,
so I am looking to purchase a new laptop as soon as possible. I have
spoken
to several people regarding the pros and cons of Windows 8, and as to
whether sticking with Windows 7 would be a wiser decision. Another factor
to
consider is that, while Windows 7 is still readily available, my selection
of Windows 8 laptop options would be somewhat broader.
I would appreciate hearing from those of you who have been using Windows 8
on a regular basis both successfully or unsuccessfully, and whether either
7
or 8 seems to provide the JAWS user with greater advantages other than 7
being within our comfort zone. I do expect, within reason, that 8 would
involve a significant learning curve, but if some tasks are outright
impossible to perform (reading specific screens, navigation issues, etc.),
please share these as well, as too much ongoing frustration might make me
think twice about the switch.
Many thanks in advance,
Kristina
