WordPad maybe. Notepad no. (If made to, it will read gibberish where it doesn't understand codes in word.

If the document is not sensitive information, you could email to
someone you know that has MSWord and they could open then save as an
text or PDF file and send back to you

Subject: [JAWS-Users] opening old document

Hi all.
I have an old document that I can no longer open. I think it was made
using MS Word 97 and 2003. I am currently using Windows 7 with JFW 14
and no longer have MS Word. I have been able to open some .doc files
with JART, but not this particular file. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Becky
