Try shift F8 or control Shift 8, don't remember but it will turn off those
marks.

Following the "line" instructions helped a bit.
This got rid of some of the verbiage, however, I hear "paragraph mark" when
using the left/right arrow when reading a document.
By the way, I do not have "Office" just Microsoft word with XP.
