Hi Lenny,
Although there's no search box on the windows 8 start screen, if you start 
typing, then a search pane automatically appears, and your text is entered into 
a search box in this search pane. Jaws then automatically reads the first 
search result, just like it does in windows 7 or vista.
Concerning your other question about finding the downloads folder, you can 
search for it from the start screen, but you have to type in the complete name.
