Your instructions fixed the startup issue. However, as soon as I hit
ctrl o to open a file backstage view comes up again.

Hello Leonard,
1. Press Alt+F.
2. Press Alt+T.
3. The first category in the list of categories will be "General" and
it is the category to use.
4. From the category list use Shift+Tab three times and you will find
the checkbox in the Startup options with the prompt to "Show the start
screen when this application starts."
5. Use spacebar to uncheck the checkbox.
6. Tab to OK and press spacebar.
When you restart Excel, it should open without going to the Excel start
screen.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] changing start up option in excel 2013
I was able to change the ms word start up option in ms word 2013 so that
backstage view doesn't appear first and word goes directly to a blank
document. However, I can not locate where to change the start up option in
excel 2013 so that excel goes directly to a workbook instead of backstage
view. When backstage view appears first I can not use ctrl o to open an
excel file.
