I tried unchecking the box for automatic update to see if it would
update to 31.0 and it did not work.
when I check the update history my version still is 24.6.0
do you have any other ideas?

I, too, have set Thunderbird to update automatically. Version 31 was
just released July 22. Unlease updates are batched I should have been
updated.
Maybe the best way to update automatically is to check not to.
When I updzated to version 31 all of my messages wsere either defined as
junk or had remote content. To rid of remote content notes go to
options,security
and then arrow to privacy. Check the box allowing remote content and
the notes go away. Ah, Thunderbird adventures.

but there maybe focus issues. for example, for me, JAWS can't read the
about
dialog, but insert+control+v gives me the version currently running. even
though I set the updater to only notify me, choosing the help and about,
the
update automatically starts downloading and there's no cancel button. don't
know if there's a way to prevent auto updating?
