Unfortunately, XP users can no longer download MSE because it is no longer supported, although XP users who already have it installed will continue to recieve database updates until next August. The only free anti-virus option for XP users besides AVG is Avast, which some users have reported accessibility issues with, and may require booting into safe mode in the event that it doesn't work out and you want to uninstall it. So your best bet may still be AVG.

Microsoft security essentials is an antimalware package from Microsoft. It meets one of your requirements, that being free, but whether it's actually good is a matter of debate and it depends on how you spin the issue. It's failed some antivirus tests lately and so I have difficulty recommending it. Having said that, I've used it and I haven't gotten infested with any malware as of right now. Then again, I'm a particularly cautious user and I do a few things to lower my risk, such as tweeking security settings on my router, using a script blocker and an ad blocker, being cautious about opening attachments, etc. those practices certainly don't guarantee any immunity but, as I said, I've never been hit with malware, at least not so far.
The Web site for more info or to download it is
