Hi,
For this and similar pdf's, google: pdf2txt, which is a utility
developed by jamal mazrui that gets around the 'protection failures'
sometimes set to stymie both the wary and unwary blind screen-reader
user. There's a checkbox in its settings to check, so that it'll do OCR
when necessary. Jamal has also developed a number of other useful,
freeware utilities, and is a sometime scripter for JAWS. It uses
Google's Tesseract OCR software. it doesn't always deliver the goods,
but in this instance it probably will.

Mike, thanks for all of your help. I made the changes and still can
not open the file. I wrote to the author and he made a special
unprotected file for me.

Hi Lenny,
I just checked my AdobeXI & after opening preferences, navigating to
Security Enhanced, tab 1 time, & the first option is, Enable Protected
Mode
at startup. This should be unchecked. Then tab to the, Okay button,
press
enter to save the change & close preferences.
Take care.

Mike, well, I see security enhansed it is 25 of 31 in the list. There
are no
settings to uncheck. It goes from security to signatures. here is a
little
more about the file.
Thanks for ordering this Mini-Mystery e-Book. It is attached to this
e-mail
as a pdf file.
I tried to read it with openbook and it tells me that the file is
empty. I
was able to print it but not read it go figure! I may have to scan
each page
to get around the problem. It would be nice if I could change the
security
options I am using the xi version of adobe.

Lenny,
In Adobe Reader do you have, Protected Mode, disabled? If not try the
following if your running Adobe XI:
Note that there are links with the Security Enhanced section to
explain the
consequences of
unchecking items there, and you may want to find out what they have to
say.
1. Open Adobe from your desktop or start menu shortcut. Go into
preferences
with control-k. JAWS lands on an item in a tree view.
If you have been here before, it will be the item you last opened.
Arrow
down to Security Enhanced. Note that this is the item below
"Security."
Then uncheck these 2 options, the 2nd option is not necessary to
uncheck
but, optional:
Enable Protected Mode at startup, needs to be unchecked.
Enable Enhanced Security, does not need to be unchecked.
Note. When making changes in the Security Enhanced section, you will
be told
that Adobe needs to be restarted, but you can wait to finish the other
changes first.
2. Launch the Edit menu, scroll down to the Accessibility submenu and
open
it. Scroll down to the Set-up Assistant and press enter. The Set-Up
Assistant has five screens, but the only change you have to make is on
the
last, screen 5 of 5. Go through all the screens, pressing spacebar on
"Next"
in each instance, until you reach the fifth and final screen. Here,
tab to
the check box labeled "Display PDF documents in the web browser" and
make
sure it
is unchecked. It may be checked by default. Then tab to the Okay
button &
press enter to save & close.
Take care.

Hi Lenny,
Have you tried to use Openbook to read it or, another OCR program? I
don't
have a protected PDF file to play around with so, I can't experiment.
1
other thought, since the text is on the screen, try virtualizing the
window,
selecting all the text, & pasting it into Notepad to see if you can
read it
that way. Remember to escape out of the virtual view or, you won't be
able
to open Notepad.
Take care.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] pdf protection error
I purchased a magic illusion document. It came in pdf format. When I
try to
open it I get a protection error that states that the author set
security
that can not be accessed. Interesting, my wife can read it on the
screen.
Jaws can not get past the protection error even the jaws cursor can
not read
what my wife sees. How can I get around this.
