As far as I can tell, they are exactly the same. In fact, I am now
installing some optional updates through Internet Explorer as we speak.

I have just noticed that I have two windows update one in control panel
and one in internet explorer 11 under the tools menu.

I have been using the windows update icon in control panel.
I am using windows 8.1 on a 64 bit machine and jaws 15 .
