Microsoft says to just use "C" now. Try that.

I just tried this and on my windows 7 word 2010 system it doesn't work.  I
got out of spell check and went back to the word the long way.  A pain in
the neck.

According to Jaws Help, Insert + C reads the highlighted word & the text
that surrounds it.
