if you are having troubles updating on windows 7, I had that problem too
I fixed it by
in the windows search box type
services
the updates are tied into the security center I found a blog about how to fix it it does not explain how to do it with the keyboard but I'm sure you can do it. sorry I don't remember how I did it.

Windows 7 and Windows Vista
Click Start.
In the Start search box, type services.
In the Programs list, click Services.

2. In the details pane, right-click (or tap and hold) Security Center, and then tap or click Properties.

3. In the Startup type list, tap or click Automatic (Delayed Start).

4. The screen shot for Security Center Properties dialog box
In the Service Status area, tap or click Start.

Notes

If the service starts successfully, tap or click Apply, tap or click OK, and then close the Services window. If you receive an error message that resembles the following message when you click Start, go to step 6 to reconfigure the log on user for the service: "Windows could not start the Security Center service on Local Computer. Error 1079: The account specified for this service differs from the account specified for other services running in the same process."

5. In the Security Center Properties dialog box, tap or click the Log On tab, and then tap or click Browse.

6. In the Enter the object name to select box, type your computer name.

7. Tap or click Check Names, and then tap or click OK when the name is authenticated.
8. In the Password box, type the administrator password.
9. In the Confirm password box, retype the administrator password.
10. Tap or click Apply, and then tap or click OK.
11. Close the Services window."

HI Kevin,

I'm afraid this method does not work as I attempted it, and the preparation
stalled at around 11 and 18%. I even tried to run the set up directly from
the MSI file instead of going through the download tool, and got the same
result. I'm afraid that the only way to do this is to do it the way I spoke
about in my last message.

I'm not quite sure why this is the case. I'm thinking that maybe there may
be a piece of hardware that is installed on my computer that is so old, that
the Windows 10 set up utility can't figure it out.

Not saying this is the case, I'm just thinking out loud, and this is
actually a working theory I've come up with.

I'm going to actually uninstall the actual piece of hardware I have on my
computer that is so old, even Windows is afraid to touch it with a 10 foot
installer, LOL, and see what happens when I try the installer again.

Oh, and just for your information, the piece of hardware is an old
SoundBlaster Sound card that's giving me the trouble, I believe, so watch
for an update tomorrow at some point.

why not try getting the free windows 10 upgrade. if you got the get windows
10 notification just click it and reserve a copy. then just use the win 10
media creation tool to upgrade your computer.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] W 8.1 upgrade

I am using W7, outlook 2010 and latest jaws at present. I am having
problems with W7 installing windows updates. A Microsoft technician went
through my computer and told me that the only solution to my problem is to
get a computer repair tech to repair my computer and the other solution is
to upgrade to W8.1 or W10. The computer is to old for W10 but I think it
could handle W8.1. I would like to know if there is a big learning curve
between W7 and W8.1 as I think that might be the cheapest way to go.This is
my old backup and experimental computer so I am looking for easiest and
cheapest way out. This is an old computer but still works pretty well.
Thanks for any suggestions or advice.
