1. ***Reinstalling Jaws 16 or 17.
1. The first thing you need to do on your Windows 10 computer is, Download
the latest version of Jaws to your Download folder.
2. If you upgraded to w-10 from w-7 or w-8.1, you need to uninstall Jaws,
you can keep shared components and shared settings, so, uninstall Jaws 16 or
17.
3. You then can use Narrator, press Windows key+Enter, to turn Narrator
on/off, to go to your download folder where a downloaded copy of Jaws 16 or
17 should be.
4. Now, install Jaws 16 or 17, Freshly on to your new w-10 computer.
5. This has proven to increase the performance of Jaws on w-10, especially,
in the Start button area, the live tile region, and in the Settings area of
w-10.
6. Redo your Jaws shortcut keystroke, Control+ALT+J.
7. Redo your Jaws setting to make sure, that it is set to come on at the
log-onscreen.
For whatever reason these two settings are not saved, all other Jaws
settings are preserved.
8. If you are using Open book, you should do a fresh reinstall of this
program as well as, any other screen reading programs, on your w-10
computer.


2. ***Setting default programs in w-10.
1. windows key+I, Open settings.
You are in a horizontal list of 9 items, use your right and left arrow keys
to move across the items.
2. Right arrow to System, press enter, down arrow to default apps and press
enter.
3. Tab across this window, look for the internet browser which by default is
Microsoft edge.
4. Press the spacebar on the edge, tab to IE, press the spacebar, this will
set IE as your default browser.
Do the same thing with the different defaults programs, for example, email
clients.
5. Tab to email default, press the spacebar on it, tab to the email client
you wish to use, and press spacebar, to set the email client, as your choice
for the default.


3. ***Changing your File Explorer Options:
The “Old folder Options” is now called, File Explorer Options.
So for an easier way of finding it, do the following.
1. Press enter on the Start button.
2. Start typing, folder,
3. Press down and up arrow, look for File Explorer Options, Control Panel,
press enter.
4. By default, the first item is set to Quick Access.
Down arrow one time to change it to, This PC.
5. Press Control+Tab, go to, reset Folder Options press the Spacebar,
Confirm again with the Spacebar, this will apply changes to all folders.
6. Tab to the OK button and press enter.
7. Now, when you Press Windows key+e, this keystroke will open your, This
PC, instead of Quick access.


4. ***How to Turn off the background apps in w-10, all are on by default.
1. windows key+I, Open Settings.
2. Right arrow to, Privacy and press enter.
3. Arrow down to, Back ground apps and press enter.
4. Tab across, and use your Spacebar to uncheck most of these apps.
Each time you uncheck an App you will be placed on the Home button, Just Tab
across to the next App you wish to turn off and press the Spacebar.


5. ***How to change how Windows updates are delivered.
1. Press Windows key+I, Open Settings.
2. Right arrow to, Update and Security, press Enter.
3. Tab to, Advanced options, press enter.
4. Tab four times to, Choose how your updates are delivered, Press Enter.
5. Tab one time, press Insert+Tab, should say, learn more link, this means
it is off.
6. Tab one more time, press Insert+Tab, should say after message, Button, if
it says, button checked, press the Spacebar to uncheck this button.
These two items will affect your computers speed and performance, especially
in IE, not to mention Security.
Microsoft leaves all these back ground Apps and Settings on by default.


6. ***Live Tile Region.
1. Press enter on the start button, or just press the Windows key.
2. Down arrow two times.
3. You should hear, Start Apps, Play and Explore, group header list box.
4. Press the right arrow, You should hear, Life at a glance, Group header
list box.
5. Press the Right arrow again, if you have another category here, my
Computer says, Watch ESPN, Group header list box.
So, from Right to left, you should have 2 or 3 Group Header list boxes or
more, depending on how many downloaded Apps you have, installed on your
computer.
6. From the selected header, down-arrow one time to the first App in this
category.
If this is an App you wish to turn off and then unpin from the Start area,
do the following 7. Press the Application key on each app you wish to turn
off its live tile, or unpin it from the Start area.
For example:
After you highlight, a certain live tile app, that you want to turn off.
Press the Application key, go down to, Turn off live tile, Press enter, this
will turn the live tile off.
After turning the live tile off, press the Application key again, on the
same app, go to, Unpin from start, press Enter to, Unpin the same App from
start.
this will remove the app from  the Start area list Region.
8. You can also resize each App, press the Application key on the
highlighted app, go down to, the Resize sub menu, press the Right arrow key,
You can choose from, Small, Medium, and Large which is wide, Press the Enter
key on your choice.


7. ***The All Apps region of the Start button area.
If you want to uninstall, an unwanted app on your computer, do the
following.
Remember there are many built-in Apps in w-10 which you can’t  uninstall, so
just turn them off.
Example, Cortana, the Edge, Mail, Calendar, Calculator, Xbox, and many more.
1. Press enter on the Start button.
2. Up arrow to, , All Apps, press Enter.
3. Down arrow through the list of Apps, if you find one you wish to
uninstall, do this.
4. Press the Applications key, down arrow to, Uninstall, and press Enter,
press the Spacebar to confirm.
Many of these apps in the All Apps area, are built into the w-10 system, you
will not be able to uninstall them, but you can turn their live tile off,
and turn them off in the Background Apps section of Settings..


8. *** How to put the, this pc, icon on the desktop.
1. Press Windows key+I, Opens Settings.
2. Right arrow to, Personalization, and press Enter.
3. Go down to Themes, and press Enter.
4. Tab three times to, Desktop icons link, press Enter.
5. Tab twice, You should hear, This pc, one of five List box, press Enter on
This PC, to get it to show on your Desktop.
6. if not, Tab one time to Change desktop icon links, , press Enter.
7. Follow the prompts to change your This PC icon...

9. ***How to put a shortcut to your user folders, on the Desktop.
1. Windows key+M, go to your Desktop.
2. Highlight your, This PC Icon, Press Enter.
3. Go down to your, C: Drive, press Enter.
4. Go down to your, Users folder, press Enter.
5. Highlight your user folders, for example, Fred, press the Application
key.
6. Go down to, Send To sub menu, press the Right arrow key.
7. Go down to, Create shortcut on Desktop, press Enter.
Now you have a shortcut to your users folders on your Desktop, like,
Documents, Downloads, Music, Favorites, and any other User folders, which
have been created, on your computer.
Now, when you are on the Desktop, and you want to go to your, User folders.
Just, Press Enter on your name, example Fred, shortcut icon on the desktop,
you will be in a list of all your User folders.

10.*** Making Program shortcut Icons, on your Desktop.
1. Press Enter on the Start button, or just press the Windows key.
2. Up arrow to, All Apps, press enter.
For example, making a shortcut for Word 2013.
3. Arrow down to, Microsoft Office Folder Collapsed, press enter to expand.
4. Arrow down to, Word 2013, Press the application key.
5. Arrow down to, Open file Location, press enter.
6. Press the application key, go down to, Send to, sub menu, Right arrow one
time.
7. Down arrow one time to, Desk Top create shortcut, press enter.
You now have a shortcut Icon for Word 2013 on your desk top.
You can do these same steps, for the other programs here under All Apps as
well.


11. ***How to put a shortcut, for IE on your Desktop or Taskbar.
1. Go to, This PC or computer on your Desktop, by pressing, Windows key+M,
then press Enter.
2. Highlight your C: drive, and press Enter.
3. Highlight program files X86, press Enter.
4. Highlight Internet Explorer, press the Application key.
5. Arrow down to,  Send to sub menu, right arrow once.
6. Down arrow to , Put short cut on desktop, press Enter.

Putting a shortcut for, IE on the Taskbar:
1. Press Enter on the Start button.
2. Go up to, All Apps, press enter.
3. Go to, Windows Accessories folder, press Enter.
4. Go down to, Internet Explorer, press the Application key.
5. Go down to, Pin to the Taskbar, press Enter.
You are done.


12. ***Using a Pin to log-in to w-10.
Set Up a PIN instead of a password to sign into w-10
How to create a four-digit PIN associated with your user account log-in on
w-10.
1. Windows key+I, for Settings.
2. Right arrow 4 times to, Account, press Enter.
3. Down arrow to, Sign-in options, press Enter.
4. Tab to the, Add Button, press Enter.
5. Press the Control key, to silence Jaws, You are asked to, Verify your
account, Tab to the Password edit field, type in your password, the one you
use to sign-in to your computer.
6. Press enter on, Sign-in, press Control key, to silence Jaws.
7. You may need to Tab and Shift+Tab to find the pin edit field, Type in a
four digit number pin, Tab one time, confirm pin by typing it again.
8. Tab to the OK button, press enter.
9. Press ALT+f4, to close settings.
10. Restart your computer.
11. You should be on, Sign-in Options, press enter, type just your 4-digit
pin and wait, do not press enter here. If you are not on sign-in options,
when your computer restarts, just tab or Shift+tab too It, press enter, type
in just your 4-digit pin and wait, if you need to confirm, press Spacebar.
You will come up on your desktop.
12. The next time you restart your computer, you will hear:
Pin sign-in, Just type in your 4-digit pin number, You will hear Jaws say,
Sign-in options, and just be patient wait, you will be loaded on to your
desktop.
This is a very quick and snappy way of logging into your w-10 computer
system.


13.*** How to Verify your Microsoft Account in Windows 10.
1. Pressed Windows key+I, for Settings.
2. Right arrow to, Accounts, press Enter.
3. Tab to, Verify Account link, press Enter.
4. Turn Jaws off, Insert key+f4, Enter.
5. Pressed Windows key+enter, to turn narrator on.
6. Tabbed to the Choose how the verification code is sent combo-box.
7. Pressed ALT+down arrow, to open this Combo-box.
I chose to verify by email.
8. Tab to the Confirm email edit field, type in your Email address.
9. Tab to the, Next button, press Enter.
An email will be sent with your verification code.
10. Copy the verification code.
11. Paste or Type the code into the code Verification edit field.
12. Tab to the Next button, pressed Enter, you are done.
So, definitely use narrator, narrator had no trouble with this window.
So, if you do not have, sighted assistance, use narrator and follow my above
instructions, and you should be just fine.


14. ***Miscellaneous.
Next, You want to turn this setting off, unless you want your computer
sending a lot of information to Microsoft, Note, If you are using Cortana,
you will have to leave this on.
1. Press Windows key+I, open Settings.
2. Right arrow to, Privacy, press Enter.
3. Go down to, Speech, Inking, and Typing, press Enter.
4. Tab one time, Make sure that it says, getting to know me, and not stop
getting to know me.
5. If it says, stop getting to know me, just press the spacebar to change it
back to getting to know me.


Here is another tip to organize what you see when tabbing across from your
Desktop.
1. From your Desktop, Tab to the Notification Chevron button, or just press
Windows key+B, do not press enter.
2. Press the Application key.
3. Go down to, Hide the Task View, press Enter.
Any time you want to open the Task View just press, Windows key+Tab.
This will take the Task view out of the way, when you are tabbing across
your computer from the Desktop.
There are other things in this list which you can turn off, by pressing
enter on them, such as the extra search area.
For example: When Tabbing from left to right from my Desktop, this is What I
hear:
Start button, Taskbar, Notification Chevron button, Show desktop button,
back to my Desktop.
I have removed the other two default items from tabbing across, the Task
view and the extra Search.
This makes for a cleaner experience, when Tabbing to the Desktop and Taskbar
and Notification Chevron button on our, W-10 computers.

Themes.
1. Press Windows key+I, Open Settings.
2. Right arrow to, Personalization, Press Enter.
3. Down arrow to, Themes, press Enter.
4. Tab one time to, Themes Settings link, press Enter.
5. Tab across the various Themes, press Enter on the one you wish to try.
I have tried several, I am now using the Antarctica theme.
6. Now from Themes, Tab two times to, Advanced Sound settings link, press
Enter.
This opens the four Tab dialog box Window that you are used to seeing in
previous Windows releases.
7. Press Control+Tab, to go through, The Sounds, Recording, Play back, and
communication Tabs.
For more about this dialog, listen to my Audio Tutorial called: Sound card
Window and more, on my OneDrive Group link.
8. From Themes, Tab three times to, Desktop Icon settings link, press Enter.
9. Tab and make sure you hear, This PC icon, one of five, if you do not have
this Icon currently on your Desktop, press Enter on This PC Icon.

My purpose for developing this material for the Blind computer user, is to
help teach and assist a Blind person to use w-10 with a Screen reader.
My hope is that the Blind computer user, will grow in confidence, in their
ability, to use, and to navigate the w-10 computer system with a Screen
reader like Jaws.
This is the first of many tutorials I hope to produce for the Blind computer
user, that they may be able to complete various, computer tasks all by
themselves.
