Thanks Annette and Jean for your very helpful info on the blank line issue. I now know I'm not crazy and have a starting point from which to correct this problem. Thanks again, Norma

It's defined as pts, which stands for points. In the paragraph dialogue, you will see points above and points below. The number varies with font choice. Note that in days of yore, people used to put two returns between paragraphs to add that wanted blank white space. But that can end up causing blank lines where you don't want them, as in at the top of a page. So, the blank space you are seeing is created by Word, and Jaws would indeed recognize a blank space if you were to press the return key multiple times. Hope that helps. If so, then there is a setting that is telling Word to either automatically insert an extra blank line after a hard Return, or the setting might have something to do with the height of that blank line between paragraphs. I can never remember where these changes reside, so you can start by looking in places like the paragraph settings, or in the style settings. Good Luck! These things drive me crazy! I had a sighted person proofread a document and they are seeing blank lines in the document which I cannot detect using Jaws. For example, with Jaws I read This is line 5 of the document. This is line 6 of the page. So, of course, I assume there is no blank line between the 2 lines of text. But the sighted person says there is a blank line there, that is what he sees. Forgive my frustration, but how in the hell am I supposed to create documents like this? I hope this is just a setting I need to adjust, but it seems so fundamental that a mere setting wouldn't cover something so critical to composition. I'm hoping someone can enlighten me. Meanwhile, I'm off for a mental health break. Or breakdown, whatever comes first. <smile> Thanks, Norma For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/ For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/ For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/ For answers to frequently asked questions about this list visit: http://www.jaws-users.com/help/
