Hi, Anna. No one using 8.1 has responded, so I'll give you my experience on my windows 7 system. I just ran Windows update and it went very quickly, from checking to installation. It took two or three minutes at most, which is unusually fast. The update must have been relatively small. Has it been a while since you've run Windows update? That could explain the long time. Otherwise, I imagine any number of factors could have slowed down the process when you went through it: some temporary connection problem, excessive downloading at that time. I find I can still work on my PC while windows update is going on in the background. Does it disrupt your machine? Otherwise, I doubt there's anything to worry about.

I found some stuff that I want to run does not work on windows8 and windows8.1. but no it should not take an hour it should take no more than 2 or 3 minutes to check for updates.
