Hi Brian,
I have an issue with Skype. I have a person in my favorites and when I put
the focus on his name it does not tell me if he is online. My Skype use to
do that. Now when I put the focus on his name it says " This person has not
shared their details with you." Do you have any idea How I could get this
announcement back. I am using Jaws 18 and W10.
Mr. Ed

Hello Patti,

In the settings for notifications and actions the "Get notifications from
apps and other senders" button needs to be checked before the apps are
listed. After that button is checked you need to tab several times as all
apps that might need to send you notifications should be listed. When you
open System from settings and then press enter on the Notifications and
Actions category, tab about three times to find the button that needs to be
checked, at least, that is how it is on my system. Spacebar checks or
unchecks the button.

If you still don't find any Skype options when you tab several times there
is another area to check. If you do find the Skype entries after checking
the button then make sure the Skype entries are checked. If JAWS doesn't
tell you they are checked then use spacebar to check the items.

You can also check in your privacy settings. Open settings with Windows key
I. Tab into the list of categories and navigate to and open the Privacy
category. When you press enter key to open the Privacy category you get a
list of items and one of the categories is Notifications. Press enter on
the Notifications category and tab to the "Let apps access my notifications"
and check that button if necessary. Press enter key on the various
categories in this list such as Microphone, camera, messaging, etc. Entries
for Skype should be listed under the microphone, camera and messaging items
so tab across the items in each of those categories and make sure Skype
entries are checked. I have noticed that sometimes JAWS doesn't speak the
state of the button. Sometimes tabbing away from the button and then using
shift with tab to move back to it will cause JAWS to speak the state.
Otherwise, pressing spacebar on the button will usually cause JAWS to say
that the button is checked.

JAWS is supposed to speak notifications automatically. I don't know what
scripts you are using or whether or not there could be some incompatibility
with the scripts and the version of JAWS and Skype you are using.

Hope you get it working.

Take care.

Hi Brian,
I checked out everything you wrote, and all the settings in Skype are check.
Now when I went to Notifications and Actions I couldn't find anything that
said Skype, and I did it twice.
I copied my Skype scrips from J17, and put them in J18 E N U folder, but
still Skype doesn't tell me who is on or off line in J18.
Now in J17 my Skype works fine, so do you have any other thoughts?
Patti

Hello Patti,

Here are some settings you might check in Skype and in Windows 10.
According to the JAWS help the notifications are supposed to be
automatically spoken. I don't use Skype notifications but I hope that when
the following Skype and Windows settings are set that JAWS will announce the
notifications for you.

Go into the Skype notification settings by pressing Alt with T, press enter
on options, and arrow down to the notification category. Tab across the
options in that category.
Enable Skype for Windows desktop notifications should likely be checked.
As you tab across check or uncheck the checkboxes to reflect what you want.
The checkboxes are "Comes on line", "Goes off line", "Starts an IM with me",
"Sends me a video message", "Sends me a file", "Request my contact details",
"Leaves me a voice message," "Has a birthday," "Sends me contacts", "Sends
me a message", "Recording a video message or sharing screens."
The next Skype category is notifications sounds.

In the Skype options the "Accessibility Mode" should be checked under the
accessibility category.

The following is from the JAWS help system regarding Skype:

When Skype alerts you to an incoming call, JAWS automatically speaks the
text of the notification regardless of what application you are currently
using. The notification is also shown on the braille display as a flash
message. You can also press INSERT+SPACEBAR followed by SHIFT+R to repeat
the incoming call notification.
If you are in a chat window typing messages back and forth with another
Skype user, JAWS automatically announces incoming messages as they are
received. Incoming messages are also shown on the braille display as a flash
message. If you are involved in multiple conversations and you are using the
Compact View, which opens each conversation in a separate window, JAWS will
also read incoming messages from other conversations in the background. To
repeat the last background message, press INSERT+SPACEBAR followed by
SHIFT+R.

In Windows 10 Skype should be allowed to give notifications. Use Windows
key I to go into settings. If you have the anniversary edition of Windows
10 then each time you go into a new level in settings focus goes to the
search box so you need to tab to the list of items. After using Windows key
I choose System from the list. After choosing System choose Notifications
and Actions. Tab to the checkbox "Get notifications from apps and other
senders" and have it checked. You will then need to tab multiple times to
find Skype preview and other Skype related items. Make sure they are
checked.

Take care.

Hey Gang,

I'm running J18, and windows10

My Skype isn't telling me who comes on and off line. It just makes the
sound, so how can I fix that?

I have the box checked, and I think the right scripps.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Patti
