Jim,

Try pressing control-shift-e to turn off track changes. It's a toggle that 
turns them off and on. 

That should work. If not, please re-post.

It's most likely that you've unintentionally enabled "track changes". If "track 
changes" is checked (it's under the Review tab), try turning it off.
