I just wanted to let everyone know that my folder list view question appears to have been solved. I thought I had done this yesterday, but shut down and re-booted my computer again this morning, and my folder list view is now reading properly. I'm still going to save the various instructions I have been given for addressing the problem, in case it occurs again. Thanks to all for the help!
