I agree.  System restore has saved me several times.  I would also check the 
display.  I changed mine once and found that I couldn't do anything with it 
and had to change back.  I can't remember which one I was trying out.  It 
may have been a power saving display.

Before reinstalling windows why not try system restore.  You can go back to
a previous date when everything was working fine.  You do not lose updates
to user ffiles as a result.
