it means you need to open them like with right arrow. think of it as being closed besides being unread it happens sometimes in emails where there are a lot from a group like jaws users here. If you read newspapers and such and have it sent to your inbox they are collasped
There's a setting in tools/options on the read page a box for this mine is unchecked.
