Yep - this is why you have to be careful because it is only jBASE and one other emulation (might be ROS) that allow multiple characters.
I was able to confirm the bug on NT, jBASE 3.5 but with a different
outcome, Windows aborts the program and shows the dreaded: "... has
encountered a problem and needs to close..." message.
  
Right, well that explains that there is a hard and fast bug in the FIELD statement, and that is why your jBASEWORK was corrupt too with a certainty of about 90% ;-)
