yes, separation of tasks is a much needed rationalization.

you are correct in your fears.

Having the configuration as get/set jB is the way to go, from an
administration standpoint that is.

<sigh/> this is where you waste time and cycles getting all the drivers
to behave the same.

jdbc1.0 wrapping is still needed and you will go crazy making sure all
work ;-)
