Well, first of all let me remind you that autoconf fixes this problem ;)
And then, getting back to earth, yes, it is possible to do it. How? Simple:
analyse the result of uname and set the separator to one or other, like
this:

now. There's a catch: I don't remember what Cygwin returns as a uname value,
