Unicast? Sure, use the UDP stuff or TCP/IP connections...not sure what
that would help though..

I think you are confusing unicast and multicast. Multicast does what you
talk about.

I and Marc began doing some clustering design this week, and we have a
rough draft for it (not on paper though). I will make a prototype using
that design shortly, and will post a brief outline of the main ideas. As
mentioned before it is Jini-based (yes, using multicast for dynamic
detection of cluster nodes). I think you will like it...
