Some projects do, some don't.  There are (and always have been) several 
projects out there that, TO MY KNOWLEDGE haven't been funded.  Debian, 
for example, has had some gracious donations, but for the most part is 
volunteer effort.  I don't think that every successful open source 
project needs funding.

I'm not so sure -- it really depends on the people involved, whether or 
not they can "support themselves", what their personal lives are like, etc.
