This seems like a very promising course.  In
particular it seemed as though provisions for sharing
state, failure detection and reliable multi-cast have
already been considered.

Following the discussion on this thread, this (to me)
seems the easiest to visualize the ultimate goal.  I
think JavaGroup deserves some serious
inquirery/discussion.
