I wrote a new local jca-jdbc wrapper fixing this and other problems and checked it into 3.1 alpha (this is cvs head, checkout with no branch tags). It ends up getting built as jboss-local-jdbc.rar. Due to jdbc changes in jdk1.4, it gets built differently for different jdk's (makes me want ifdefs!)
In jboss 3.1 alpha, hsqldb-service.xml is modified to use this wrapper rather than the old one.
