Good work!

I think all the validation you suggest will be a very good idea.  I don't
remember the details, but I think I copied some previous code without
looking at it very hard for the 14 digit stuff.

I'm not sure we need a global counter in the XidFactory.  Normally there
will be only one per vm.  However, we should think of some way to make sure
that there can be several on one physical machine that are guaranteed to
generate different xids.  Do you think the timestamp is adequate for this? 
Some other similar code uses a guid, although I don't remember how they got
it.

If you can add more validation I may wait to commit until the next version.
