This is an interesting benchmark. Can you provide a test deployment? Axis always parses the message and records the SAX events, in parallel it builds up an in memory representations of the SAAJ object graph. For your kind of data this is less than ideal, your data proof this point.
The new JBossWS project will specifically address lazy parsing of messages. The prototype will hopefully be available for JBossWorld. Do you have JWSDP deployed in JBoss?
