I had exactly the same problem. After some debuging and testing I found out, that the portlet instances you are using on your page are invalid. This means portal.DefaultPortlet.DefaultPortletInstance can't be found.
1. Check if everything is spelled correctly. 2. Check if you have defined the name of you portal correctly as "portal" inside of jboss-portlet.xml in you WEB-INF dir.
