it is the other way around:
Big freemail providers like web.de or gmx.{de,net} require
users to first "log in" over pop3 before they can send mail
over the smarthost/relaying functionality via smtp.

But yes, this is no top prio. I always fall over this on jira, which offers 
"major" as default prio.
