Hi All,

I read the article
http://www.sys-con.com/java/archives/0507/mcclintockroberts/
and now I believe that Rules Engines should become a part of J2EE
platform and this the next big step that J2EE technology is to do.
I still have rather unclear idea about how Rules Engines work in
practice and how they should work with J2EE, so any comments and
opinions on this topic are appreciated.
Two things that I remember after reading the article are:
"RETE algorithm" and "Actions are the result of Rules Engine work" :-)
Below I give my very first impressions from various open source
rules engines that I manages to found in the web.
I invite everybody to follow the links below and to share your
impressions.

JESS http://herzberg.ca.sandia.gov/jess/
isn't free for commercial use, not a good pair for JBoss IMHO.

JEOPS http://sourceforge.net/projects/jeops is under LGPL,
but it is a rule based preprocessor for Java language.
I don't see how to use it with J2EE.
Recompilation after each change of rules?

Mandarax http://www.mandarax.org (LGPL)
The main goal of Mandarax is "rule-based knowledge processing", it
doesn't have the notion of Action, RETE algorithm is never mentioned
in its documentation. So am not sure that it fits J2EE needs.

Bluefish Rules Engine http://sourceforge.net/projects/bfre/ (LGPL),
it has the notion of Action, but its status is "pre-alpha",
and its example deals with JSP (?!)

Zeus Agent Toolkit http://sourceforge.net/projects/zeusagent/
"Zeus provides an easy to use graphical development environment to
build distributed agent systems. A RETE based rule engine and a
backward chaining planner are bundled along with an interface to Java.
Development Status: 5 - Production/Stable"
The project is "BCS IT Award Winner 1997".
They use proprietary licence
http://cvs.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/cvsweb.cgi/~checkout~/source_code/zeus/licence.html?rev=1.1.1.1&content-type=text/html&cvsroot=zeusagent
which seems to be Python-like.
The most attractive variant for me.

Regards,
 Oleg
