How big is the file that you are uploading? If it is large (> 1/2 MB) you might have to adjust the max_allowed_packet setting within MySQL.
Also, the console log, or the server/default/log/server.log, usually have better error messages. The errors displayed in the browser tend to be too generic and are useless for debugging problems. Those logs might provide the root cause for this problem.
