I tried as well with the most recent version of Portal and didn't see any problem. Note that, as noted in: http://docs.jboss.com/jbportal/v2.7.0.B1/referenceGuide/html/installation.html#building_deploying_from_source sh build.sh deploy only deploys a minimal portal which is not very useful by itself. To be able to see some content, you need to deploy additional modules and/or portlets of your own.
Try deploying the core-samples module: cd core-samples;sh build.sh deploy This will deploy sample portlets and create some additional pages.
