The above one is incorrect. You can mark a class as ApplicationException only if it derives from an Exception. I guess what you wanted was: @ApplicationException (rollback=true) | public class SessionException extends LoginFailedException Remove the use of @ApplicationException on the AuthenticateUserServiceBean.
