Hmm. I have to say I haven't seen this before. Can you get the mail example working?
I would suggest following it's layout - jboss-seam-mail.jar and jboss-seam-ui.jar, jsf-facelets.jar in WEB-INF/lib rather than the ear (and really myfaces-api/impl as well) Otherwise, I would suggest wrapping the EL in the body inside h:outputText to see if that makes any difference.
