> My question has been, what run level and symlink have been effective in
making the script run as written on Linux?

The best way I can think of to answer this question without knowing
what distribution you have is for you to boot up the machine the way it
normally would, open up a console, su then type runlevel. This will display
the current runlevel. This is probably the one you want to use. On my SuSE
GNU/Linux 7.1 setup, this is either 3 (network start without X) or 5
(network start with X and xdm).

Determining the symlink to use at this point depends on your
particular distribution and the other services you have setup (I believe the
Linux Standard Base is meant to address this).

        Hope this helps.
