To get a clearer picture here's how things are configured. Users hit a content switch that round robbins to 3 redhat servers each running apache web server. Those web servers reference another machine running 1 instance of jboss which has the maxconnections set to 1000 in the jbossweb-tomcat41.sar/META-INF/jboss-service.xml. This instance of jboss points to another server running Sybase dataserver.
