-use jdk jboss as instalation documentation says it uses jdk no VM
-check the connector its in the right directory (jboss/server/default/lib) 
-check the file portal-mysql-ds.xml its configured to access your database      
           with user and password, dont forget the permisions to the user ;)
-delete portal-hsqldb-ds.xml if you use the bundled.

 i remember some days ago that happened to me when i unzip the jboss as   and 
then added the portal........
