I found my answer, it's rmi, which defaults to only a 15 second timeout. (sun.rmi.transport.connection). I upped it to a couple of minutes, much better!
The other part of my question probably isn't jboss but rmi also, it seems rmi needs a socket for each thread on the client side... Not positive yet. At least the connections left around are reused, and the new timer gives me more of 'em.
