EJBs are thought of as encapsulate business (application) logic, can be remoted, secured, transacted etc. MBeans on the other hand are thought of as Managed services. An example EJB would be a payroll system, and an example MBean would be an embedded database (or mail server).
JBoss is a little different that the standard view of EJBs and MBeans, because everything in JBoss is an MBean. It is just how we manage the server.
