All and all I think JBoss has some unique strategic advantages over any other "FREE" application server including SunONE.
1) Our microkernel architecture with interceptor technology. Microkernel allows a stripped down application server with only the components you need. Also provides hot-deployment of any type of service/jar/EJB/WAR/EAR, something no other vendor provides. Net-boot and farm deployment are just great ideas that other vendors just don't have as well. Our interceptor technology and pluggable architecture make JBoss the preferred integration platform for ISV's and tool vendors. In fact, one of our partners, Gemstone, has found that our interceptor architecture on the client and server has allowed them to take their distributed caching integration with JBoss to the next level. 2) Our future vision. AOP and AOP services for plain old Java objects will bring J2EE to regular java classes and truly abstract out infrastructure services from business logic. AOP will bring new levels of integration and abstraction to regular users and especially ISVs and tool vendors that have never been seen before in an Application Server. No other vendor has such a clearcut vision of the future. In fact, IMHO, it seems that Sun, Bea, Oracle, and IBM are just riding out the J2EE bubble trying to milk as much money as possible. Nobody is innovating, except for us. 3) 95% of JBoss contributors are either a) using JBoss at their current company to build J2EE applications and services or b) doing support, consulting, and training with JBoss(JbossGroup). This is very unique since the needs and desires of customers using JBoss are instantly reflected in funtionality, features, and design of it. Typical advantages of OpenSource. While developers at Sun, Bea, Oracle, and IBM are sitting in their cubes isolated from the very users of their product, JBoss contributors are either actual users themselves, or consultants who are battling every day with support and feature requests. Real-world practical coding. 4) Typical OSS advantages. 1000 eyes debugging your code. Constant stream of fresh new ideas from energetic new OSS recruits.
