If you're using Internet Explorer, make sure you have it set to use the Sun JVM for applets instead of the microsoft VM. Go to IE's Tools menu, Internet options, Advanced, and check the checkbox labelled: Use Java 2 1.4 for <applet>
It may be better if the web-console used an HTML object tag instead of an applet tag, that way it could guarantee that it gets a proper VM version regardless of the user's IE applet VM setting.
