Thanks for the help Adrian. I figured out what the problem was - it's a bug in the org.jboss.mq.pm.rollinglogged.PersistenceManager class.
I filed a bug report #990315 in sourceforce - along with some changes that I made locally to fix it. It would be nice to see this fixed in the upcoming 3.2.6 release.
